What do we do?
To achieve our goals and realize our objectives PHOS plays a tangible and concrete role in different domains:
1. PHOS advocates the recognition and implementation of disability as a
crosscutting theme within the Belgian and international policy for development cooperation. As such disability should be integrated in all initiatives and actions ensuing from this policy to guarantee that:
• People with disabilities and their representing organizations are invited to
actively participate in development cooperation
• Disability in development cooperation is clearly integrated in the different
policy notes;
• The necessary support and funding is available.
2. PHOS supplies information and sets up campaigns to sensibilize the broad public
about disability in the South and the urgency to involve this particular target
group in disability policy and initiatives:
• The information centre, located in the PHOS office which is accessible to all, holds a broad variety of books on disability in general and disability in the South. To consult our library, we request visitors to make an appointment;
• The PHOS website is our Dutch, French and English portal site about disability and development cooperation. PHOS pays special attention to the accessibility of the information: documents can be downloaded in PDF version if the source text allows it and the site is designed to accommodate people with disabilities. The site is rewarded with the Anysurfer label;
• PHOS regularly sets up campaigns about disability in the South and
related themes. If possible, PHOS shares its campaign material – expositions, publications, movies, ...- with interested actors.
3. PHOS provides in training and education about disability in the South . A few
examples of the instructed themes:
• Definition and models of disability;

get there;

4. PHOS advises and coaches Belgian policy makers and mainstream organizations
who wish to implement disability in their policies and modus operandi;
