In het jaar 2000 hebben regeringsleiders van 189 landen afgesproken om vóór 2015 de belangrijkste wereldproblemen aan te pakken. Er zijn acht concrete doelstellingen vastgelegd: de Millenniumdoelstellingen (Millennium Development Goals of MDG’s).
